Excalibur Hotel

The Excalibur Hotel and Casino is located on the south end of the Las Vegas Strip, diagonally across from the MGM Grand. With its medieval “knights of the round table” theme, it has long been a favorite with families.

If you are going to Vegas with kids on a budget, this is a good place to check out. But if you don’t have kids or if you can afford a better place, then you have plenty of other options you can consider.

Excalibur is a large hotel, with 3,991 rooms and a good sized casino. A number of rooms have been renovated with a modern decor, so if you stayed there back in the day when they were a little on the mediocre side, with hard mattresses and somewhat bland decor, you might want to give the place a second look. Your best bet are the 2,000 “widescreen rooms” -m they cost a bit more but have a nicer decor and 42 inch widescreen TVs to keep the kids occupied.

The casino area does look a bit dated, like it has seen its better days. But for families with kids, there are quite a few things at the resort to recommend the Excalibur. The Tournament of Kings show in the King Arthur’s Arena below the casino has long been a family favorite, with its knights jousting on horses.

Another new kids fave is Spongebob Squarepants – The Ride, a 4-D motion simulator. The pool area is also looking good these days, having been remodeled and given a landscaping upgrade. Now there are great deck chairs, palm trees, and ample space for kids to have fun in the water and the sun.

The hotel has a very convenient tram that connects it to the neighboring Luxor and to the Mandalay Bay Hotel. And access to New York, New York and MGM Grand via footbridge is fast and easy.

If you are not going with kids, I would not recommend this place. But with kids and in an upgraded widescreen room, this can be a perfectly nice and inexpensive hotel with plenty to keep the young ones occupied and easy access to a number of other great resorts.
