The Tropicana Hotel, located cross the street from the MGM Grand and Excalibur, is on the far southern end of the strip. It is one of the older hotels in the area, having been built in 1957.
The two towers, the 22 floor Paradise Tower and the 21 floor Island Tower, were built in 1979 and 1986 respectively. The entire property was renovated in 2011, updating the rooms, common areas, and pools significantly.
The resort has 1,658 rooms, making it about half the size of the Excalibur and one quarter the size of MGM Grand. Given the recent upgrades and the frequent room specials, it can be one of the beat deals on the Strip.
The hotel’s recently renovated pool area is now quite nice, redone, as was the rest of the resort, in a “South Beach Miami” style. It was voted best Las Vegas Pool, and is set on over 2 acres of land.
The hotel now also is home to several new entertainment venues. One, Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club, is billed as “the new home of comedy in Las Vegas”. Headliners have included Brad Garrett, Kevin Nealon, and Bob Zany.
Another new attraction at the Tropicana is the La Vegas Mob Experience, which uses what it calls interactive entertainment technology” to retell the story of the mob’s role in Las Vegas, from the early years of Bugsy Siegel up to the mob’s decline in more recent times.
The bottom line is that the Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel is a nice place to stay with very reasonable rates along with easy access to MGM Grand, New York, New York, Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay.
There is not much in the way of shopping at the resort, aside from a few stores, but there is great shopping across the street at the MGM and down the road a block at Mandalay Bay. So stay here if you want to save some money yet be right in the mix of the South Strip action.
